Rokit, Loranne Vella

Mary Woodbury

March 20, 2017

On one hand it’s [Rokit] about travelling back to one’s roots. Petrel’s grandmother was Maltese, so he leaves Croatia, where he’s been living for the past seven years, to learn more about her country. It is also about the fragmentation of Europe – Petrel is travelling at a time when the delineation of boundaries is once again on the map. And Malta is under siege, again. It is about the effects of global warming. It is about photography – seeing reality through a lens. It is about war and oppression, about history repeating itself. It is about a young man growing into an old man and about a boy becoming a man. It is about a man who has no clue what his destiny has in store for him. It is about a woman who tries to change the course of her future with every step she takes. It is about a revolution (in more than one meaning). It is about time. And it is about space.

"Din hija l-istorja ta' Rika u Petrel. Jekk tridu. Hija ħafna iktar minn hekk. Jew forsi le. Għiduli intom la taslu fit-tmiem. Nistgħu nżidu aġġettiv u nibdewha hekk: Din hija l-istorja impossibbli ta' Rika u Petrel. 'Improbabbli' forsi aħjar, għax jekk ngħidu li hija impossibbli sinjal li ma ġratx, u naf fiċ-ċert li ġrat."

Rokit huwa vjaġġ imqalleb li jibda minn ħarsa fil-lenti ta' kamera, minn ritratt, minn kaxxa sħiħa ritratti. U jkompli b'tidwira tal-globu sa ma l-ponta tas-saba' taqa' fuq tikka ċkejkna bilkemm tidher. Nafuha sew dik it-tikka.

Iżda Rokit huwa vjaġġ lejn Malta kif ma nafuhiex, Malta tal-ġejjieni, u anki lejn Malta tal-passat.

Petrel, fotografu tal-gwerra, jirnexxilu jasal Malta, iżda dak li jsib mhuwiex dak li kien qed jistenna. Isib Malta maqsuma f'setturi, f'nofs evakwazzjoni, taħt ħakma militari. U qalb din id-deżolazzjoni, Petrel, bil-kamera f'idu, jibda vjaġġ ieħor li jaqsam minn settur għal ieħor, minn fuq l-art għal taħt, minn sular għal ieħor, jipprova jsib irkaptu ta' x'qed jiġri fil-gżira, fid-dar fejn jispiċċa jgħix, kif ukoll fil-labirinti mserrpin ta' moħħu.
