Reckoning – New Journal of Environmental Justice Writing

Mary Woodbury

July 5, 2017

Lake Orion, MI (July 2017) – Reckoning Press, a new, non-profit independent press, has released the first issue of Reckoning, an annual journal of creative writing on environmental justice. The journal is edited by Michael J. DeLuca, fresh from a stint in 2016 as guest editor of Lady Churchill’s Rosebud Wristlet, the long-standing and much awarded zine from Gavin J. Grant and Kelly Link of Small Beer Press.

The issue features stylistically, culturally and ethnically diverse short fiction, essays, poetry and art addressing the ways racial and economic injustice intersect with the catastrophic influence of human institutions on the earth’s climate and the life it harbors. Contributors include Small Beer Press favorites Benjamin Parzybok (author of Couch and Sherwood Nation) and World Fantasy Award nominee Christopher Brown (author of Tropic of Kansas, forthcoming July 2017), rising stars Cae Hawksmoor and Marissa Lingen, as well as new voices like Goldie Locks, among many others.

Exactly the kind of creative writing journal we need right now. [Reckoning] celebrates diversity–of nature, of human nature–while never shying away from the stark challenges of environmental justice. These stories, essays and poems highlight and negotiate the ecology of landscapes in decline and the many spaces humans occupy in a rapidly changing world. Yet they never once lose hope.

– Emmi Itäranta, author of A Memory of Water

A bold new journal of speculation and resistance, alive with possibility yet achingly aware of the
here and now.

– Sofia Samatar, author of Tinder

I wholeheartedly recommend Reckoning. It is a refreshing breath of fresh air, full of life and language from around this one world that we are all together sharing. There is darkness and hope and work. It is a solid foundation, a grand beginning, and I cannot wait to see what comes next.

– Gavin J. Grant
